Using Organizational Resources (or Not)

Last night I dreamed I was back in high school. Somehow I'd forgotten an assignment that was due and I'd failed to bake cookies to share. Apparently we were all supposed to bake cookies and bring them to class. My current status of mommyhood never fails to reach my anxiety dreams.
I'm sure I had this dream because I knew I needed to write a post about staying organized today. I knew I should have done it last week but I didn't. I procrastinated. We were busy. We were out of town. Excuses, excuses, excuses.

Hence the anxiety dream about missing assignments.
What are your favorite resources (Products, Apps, Books, Websites, etc.) to help you get organized?

This question has been haunting me for weeks and I've been putting off writing an answer. The truth is...I don't have any resources I use regularly. I probably should but I don't. I don't have a smart phone so apps like these are out. My reading list is already long and neglected...aside from Pinterest I don't have any websites I visit frequently for organizing tips. And even my "organizing ideas" board on Pinterest is fairly bare.

Mainly I use a notebook and a month-at-a-glance calendar. Yup. I'm kinda old-school like that. In my notebook I write myself notes--ideas for dinner or blog posts, reminders to return emails or phone calls...stuff like that. On my monthly calendar I list our activities, any deadlines, and days my husband works late.

The calendar is fairly small with not a lot of space to write on the individual days. I figure if it doesn't fit in the square it's too much to do. I like the month-at-a-glance style of calendar because it gives me perspective on how busy our week/month will be all at once. It helps me to not over extend myself.

And now that I'm pregnant I have a pregnancy journal so my pregnancy related stuff doesn't get lost in my notebook. I write my midwife appointments in there along with notes for myself and ideas for names and other bits of random pregnancy goodness.

And that's it. Those are my organizing resources. What organizing resources do you (or don't you) use?

  1. I use Chorebuster (online) to help organize my chores.

But I'm a notebook and calendar person as well. Except, I'm "temporarily" displaced (since Christmas) from where my "office" is set up, so I'm a LOT at loose ends right now. Slowing putting things in new spaces though!

I do actually remember being completely organized a few times in my life, and the last time that happened was 5 years ago. :)

    Enjoyed your post!

  2. I was organized before children, and now that I am an empty nester (I actually prefer to say I am done nesting)I am trying to get back into the swing of it. Is organization one of the Life Well Lived topics? I cannot keep up with all that BlogHer has to offer. I just found out about their breakdown on parenting stages, or whatever, and need to find out about the empty nest section or topic or whatever. How did you get into the life well lived program? Just curious.

  3. I was told I am so old fashioned as I still have a rolodex on my office desk. It works for me! I keep calendars on my wall and portable ones too. I haven't gotten into the electronic appointments yet.

  4. I'm very old school too. It gives me comfort! And I like your philosophy of if it doesn't fit in the box, it's too much!

  5. I am with you...I'm old school in jotting my notes in my calendar - I use a calendar that has the tear off grocery list which I love so I can make my list, and just put it in my purse so I'm not looking for scrap paper. I also have a fridge calendar for dinner guests, appointments, and other activities for the whole family to see. Thanks for sharing!

  6. Hey twin! As you might expect, I'm the exact same way. I keep one of those freebie month by month calendars in the office so we have the broad perspective, then I have a leather-bound journal that I write day-to-day stuff in. It's lined on one side and not the other, so I hand write the week's dates, and then I write notes on the back side of the page about what happened. I'd be lost without it, but like you I don't have a smart phone and can't be bothered to keep up with online systems, even though I know it would be easier for Nate to know what I had planned.
