I Want To Draw Myself (Making Self-Portraits)

When I posted this moment last Friday I almost posted a while series of pictures instead of just the one image. I suppose it almost defeats the purpose of a post without words if I post a follow-up with lots of words, but I don't do it too often! Here's the whole story.

We've been home battling a variety of illnesses and I've been trying to come up with activities we haven't done a hundred times already. I thought it would be easy to tape some paper* up on the wall so she could draw and I could fold clothes on the table. I thought she'd be more interested if the paper was on the wall. This was true but once the paper was up she wanted me to draw with her.  Not a problem. I'd rather draw than fold clothes.

We decided to trace her outline since she really likes being traced. We do this a lot with sidewalk chalk when it's sunny outside. It's a whole lot less creepy to trace her outline on the wall than on the sidewalk! Anyhow, I digress...We traced her outline on the wall.

Then she set to work coloring herself in.
Can you see the two blue eye and the two red lips she gave herself?
And there we were making self-portraits. We've left it up on the wall for a while now and several times a day she'll walk by and add a few more details. She's planning to trace me later this morning.

What do you do for fun when you can't leave the house? We need some new ideas!

*I used a roll of easel paper from Ikea to cover the wall. But recently I noticed that Sam's club has HUGE rolls of butcher paper...so when we run out of Ikea paper I think we'll switch to that!

  2. only problem with the butcher paper is there is a slight glossy coating on it that can make some projects difficult (stickers don't really stay stuck to it). but it's cheap and we use it for painting, markers, pencils, crayons, etc.

  3. What a wonderful idea! You're a really fun Mom. If my daughter was still that young, I'd be using your ideas. =)
